« BackAshish Jha, MD '97, MPH '04 promoted to Professor of Health Policy and Management
Please join me in warmly congratulating Ashish Jha on his promotion to professor of health policy and management.
Dr. Jha received his MD from Harvard Medical School in 1997, and returned to Harvard to earn an MPH in 2004, when he was appointed assistant professor of health policy and management at HSPH. Throughout this time, he also held clinical appointments at Brigham and Women’s Hospital and at the Boston VA Health System, roles he continues to this day. In 2009, he was promoted to associate professor; at this rank, he has been the most recent incumbent of the C. Boyden Gray Chair. Since 2008, Dr. Jha has also served as a special assistant to the Under Secretary and Secretary of the Department of Veterans Affairs in Washington, D.C.
Dr. Jha has distinguished himself as an innovator, and his work has significantly influenced thinking in the scholarly field of healthcare quality improvement. His role as a practicing physician not only informs the research questions that he asks, but also enables him to keep abreast of the concerns of clinicians as he considers the issues that remain important to key policymakers. His view from the trenches of healthcare delivery has shaped his service to the Department of Veterans Affairs, where he has been a tireless champion of transparency, of outreach to other organizations, and of the creation of high-priority metrics similar to those found at hospitals in the private sector. Motivated by a feeling of obligation to veterans who have served their country, Dr. Jha has stimulated and assisted in the implementation of meaningful improvements in the quality of care provided through the VA healthcare system.
Dr. Jha plans to continue to pursue ways to improve healthcare quality using a systems approach, and expects to widen his focus to apply the insights from his domestic work to the global stage. His goals also include broadening the understanding of how federal health reform efforts may interact with existing quality initiatives, and identifying interventions for reducing inequities in care.
On behalf of the School and the faculty, I am pleased to congratulate Dr. Jha on his promotion and wish him continued success in his career at HSPH.
Best Wishes,
David Hunter
