Name Change for Department of Society, Human Development and Health

Dean Julio Frenk is pleased to announce that the Department of Society, Human Development and Health will be changing its name to Department of Social and Behavioral Sciences.

After much deliberation, the faculty voted to switch to the new name which reflects more accurately the identity and strengths of the department. Improving health behavior and addressing social disparities in health behavior remain a core challenge in public health. The Department's faculty are dedicated to the mission of identifying the social determinants of health and health behavior across the life course, and developing effective interventions to improve health in diverse settings.

The name change will take effect immediately, although we anticipate that there will be a transition period during which both the old and the new name will appear on printed documents and other materials. Students currently enrolled in the Department will be given the option of graduating under the old name if they so choose. Please join Dean Frenk in wishing the Department and its members continued success in its mission.
