Leaders in Diversity Student-Alumni Networking Dinner

The Office of Alumni Affairs, along with the Office of Diversity and Inclusion and several student organizations, coordinated the event to create connections between students and alumni who have experience working on issues that affect minority populations (as they pertain to race, ethnicity, sexual orientation, gender, socioeconomic, dis/ability, and others).

With the goal of building a community within HSPH that supports greater attention to minority health, the dinner brought together nearly 60 students and alumni. Dinner was served while three alumni, Kevin Hsu (MPH ’10), Valerie Polletta (MS ’10), and Chandra Jackson (MS ’07), discussed their work in advancing minority health and shared pieces of advice.

Students listened keenly as the panelists described what they would have done differently during their time at HSPH: take a media relations course, don’t be afraid to engage with professors, spend more time getting to know classmates. During the networking session that followed, students and alumni exchanged business cards, career advice, and nostalgic anecdotes.

Though the event was a first of its kind, students thought it was “worth every second” and were already asking when the next iteration will be. Through the efforts of alumni and students, the future is bright for more events that foster the HSPH community of health equity leaders.
